A comedy special, new hack for maximizing airline miles, and Timothée Chalamet look-a-like contest
Hi, Aliza here. How was your weekend? I’ve been filling my camera roll with screenshots from “fashion Substack” over the past few weeks in preparation for a weekend trip to London with my mom and sister — although my most-worn items ended up being this versatile raincoat,1 these water-proof Chelsea boots, and the dresses I bought on Carnaby St. from a new-to-me brand. We rode the bus in the rain, visited museums, and tried to hit as many restaurants on our list2 as possible.
Speaking of weekend plans…

Last week, I spent an excellent night home alone on my couch watching this HBO comedy special. (It’s not that new, I’m just late to it.)
My two-year-old is obsessed with stools. (Must be a developmental milestone or something, no?) This one’s been perfect for our small space. It’s affordable, he can move it around to wash his hands or “help out” in the kitchen, and — most importantly — it’s easy to fold up and store away. (Aja: Just bought this for myself… Our kitchen has tall shelves!)
I wish I’d learned about this years ago: a website that helps you book flights optimized for your reward points.
This essay on grief was beautiful, complex, and deeply comforting: “The instability of grief leaves you always changing your mind and having to reckon with iterations of yourself that feel disparate.”
Maybe this is the solution to

What a smooth, satisfying album. Start with this song.
I first bought this coat in black (in London a few years ago, coincidentally!) and loved it so much I bought it again in camel last winter. It’s my platonic ideal of a coat: warm but not bulky, effortlessly versatile, and perfectly sized (both petite and regular options available).
The headline “Netflix Developing Series Version Of Jane Austen’s Most Famous Novel” already had me excited… and then I read Dolly Alderton — one of my favorite writers — was attached! Can’t wait.
Love this ring (and this more affordable version).
Calling all NYC Timothée Chalamet fans: There’s a look-alike contest in Washington Square Park this Sunday. As of writing, 1,679 people have RSVPed “yes.” Someone please, please go and report back (
??)After Aliza and
both raved about Buck Mason, I ordered a few things. This pretty crewneck is a great layering piece, and this may be the best-fitting button-up I’ve ever worn.
Question we asked our friends:
Aja and I both rely on sunshine and time outdoors to boost our mood. As the days get shorter and the air gets chillier, we’d love to hear your rituals/habits/hacks for mitigating seasonal depression. Do you use a light therapy lamp? Have a weekly hot yoga date with your friends? Book a trip somewhere warm for the dead of January? Tell us!!
In case you missed it:
Aja & I publish twice a week. If you enjoy reading Platonic Love, there are a few ways to let us know and show your support: like this post, leave a comment, subscribe (welcome!) or upgrade to a Paid subscription, and/or share Platonic Love with your friends. As always, thank you for your support!
I’ve owned this jacket for a few years, but this one looks similar. I love that I can dress it up (i.e. London) or down (camping, hiking, etc.)
Maybe I’ll publish a full roundup later.
Ok, this is really specific to my winter location but Nashville is on a timezone boundary (CT but almost EST) so the days are really short! After finishing a full day inside, my partner and I like to go to the cool motel down the street and sit in their hot tub before dinner. It gets us outside, cozy in the tub, and we always meet fun people! It's one of my favorite things about winters now :)
Seasonal depression is so real and not fun! I met up with my bestie this weekend and we talked about how planning for winter is so important.
Just ordered some vitamin B and D supplements from Thorne because my D levels always fall once November happens.
Go ham with lights. In the morning I do 30 minutes with a Verilux lamp on full blast to the side of my laptop so it does get into my eyes. I also have a SAD lamp that is tall and leave it on a low level over my head while working all day. I can rotate between warmth levels with the tall light which is nice. Also have lots of sparkly lights and plenty of lights with dimmers.
Therapy…because I have less energy and take all shit more personally. This helps me keep things in perspective and is better overall for my marriage and friendships!
Planned fun: concerts, saunas, weekly outdoor time with friends, seeing friends, or even potlucks. A good headlamp does wonders for getting me outside for an evening XC ski. Also, the right outdoor clothes. No sense in freezing.
Budgeting for energy work like reiki. Or a massage if I’m really stuck in my body. Actually going to the gym for group workout classes because I will be a slug if not externally motivated.
Doing basic things that I know future me will be grateful for like making a big pot of soup or grocery shopping even if I’m exhausted.
After going someplace warm in winter I’ve now decided it’s an annual tradition. Headed to Costa Rica this winter for a week to go surfing.
Accept that winter is a time for deleting rather than adding in my world. I use this as my framework for decision making, and also am gentle with myself about work projects. I am a work horse during the sunny months. I slow down during the cold months and if I drop a few balls so be it.
Winters are hard for me so I try to set myself up for ease where I can.
